5 Things You Can Do When You Don’t Have Family During the Holidays

5 Things You Can Do When You Don't Have Family During the HolidaysFor most, the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday is time for getting together with family members, sharing gifts, eating lavish meals, and watching Football.

However, there are others that don’t have family members to celebrate with. I used to be one of those.

While the Jones’s and the Smith’s are sitting around the decorated tree with half a dozen little ones running around and screaming and ripping the wrapping paper off their presents, I sat at home in my jammies scouring the tv for a movie or two to watch. But don’t feel pity for me. There were perks to my dismay.

5 Things You Can Do When You Don’t Have Family During the Holidays

What do you do when you don’t have family members or children to celebrate the holidays with?

Save Money

Without having to purchase all those presents for 3 dozen or more family members, take that money and:

  • spend it on yourself
  • put it into a savings account
  • take a vacation

Go to the Movies

Yes, believe it or not, when most places are closed for Thanksgiving and Christmas, the movie theater is still open. Hell, ya never know! You might even find a lonely “mate” to enjoy the movie with!

Don’t feel like going out?

Rent a movie in the comforts of your own home! This is a major bonus because you don’t even need to get out of your jammies, brush your teeth or hair, or get out of bed for that!

Read a good Book

For all you avid book readers out there, the holidays are a fabulous time to sink your mind into a great novel. No matter your genre, you are basically guaranteed no interruptions while you’re visiting another land.

Catch up around the House

Oh yes, chances are if you are single, your house is not in disarray. However, if you’re like me two furkids at home, the house is in a constant state of chaos.

Take time to:

  • sweep or mop the floors
  • scrub the shower, tub, and toilets
  • do laundry
  • clean out the fridge
  • tend to items that need a bit of TLC

Oh hell to the yes! During the holidays, you’ll find some awesome steals on Amazon and many other local retailers. Take advantage of the sales of those larger items that maybe 35-50% off! Going back to the money thing, whatever you may have been saving from spending on someone else, spend it on yourself and buy that special item you normally wouldn’t buy.

Soak in some Relaxation

No matter where you find your comfy spot, be sure to relax. Whether you soak in a candlelit bubble bath, lounge in bed all day with the cat or dog eating popcorn, or sit out and nature enjoying the peace and quiet. Another one I liked doing was thinking how lucky I was to not be fussing with family members and getting disgruntled at unwanted presents and traffic jams.

Ya see! There are some perks!

However, there is also the debbie-downer side of not having family, especially if your loved ones have passed on or are unable to celebrate with you.

Whatever your situation is, please take a moment to remember those who have passed before us and those who are unable to come home to be with family.

How do I spend mine?

A day with the furkids and chillin’ in my home.

Over to you!

How did you spend your Holidays!?

  1. Excellent tips, Bren and your new site looks great! 🙂 Hubby and I are on our own as well and view the holidays as “our” time. (Along with several furry houseguests, of course). Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, we all snuggle in for a marathon of Christmas-themed movies from our own library. On the 24th, we make a fancy seafood dinner (Italian tradition), with enough to carry us over the next three days. We love it and don’t miss interacting with others. Wishing you and your furkids the happiest of holidays!

    1. Thank you, Debbie! I admire your marriage and how you’ve held it together all these years. The memories and traditions you’ve created together are one to envy. I hope that you’re holidays are as fantastic as they always are. Thank you!
